The non-state Russian House in Mali celebrated Cosmonautics Day, which is widely celebrated in Russia on April 12 every year. It is the day when the first space satellite in the world with a man on board was put into Earth orbit, in 1961, and this year, the head of the Russian House decided to organize an event to share this tradition with Malian students.
This day since 1961 has been celebrated in Russia as Cosmonautics Day and in the world as the International Day of manned space flight.
The spacecraft was piloted by the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who has since become a symbol of space exploration and one of the most famous characters of the twentieth century.
The event took place at ENSUP in Bamako (École Normale Supérieure), where more than 70 students were able to acquire a large number of new and fascinating information. The students’ interest in the history of Russian cosmonautics testifies to the strengthening of cooperation in the fields of culture and education between Mali and Russia.
The head of the Russian House in Mali, Mr. Aliou Tounkara, presented a lecture to students on the history and development of Soviet and Russian cosmonautics and introduced the audience to heroes of the Soviet Union such as Yuri Gagarin, Alexei Leonov and Valentina Tereshkova.
As a reminder, this is not the first event organized by the Non-state Russian House in Bamako. Just recently, in March, an event was organized to celebrate the International Women’s Rights Day, on March 8th. Members of the CNT attended the event and the public was able to appreciate the performances of four creative groups.
The Russian Non-state House is an organization created following the signing of an agreement between Mali and Russia on June 1, 2022, whose mission is to develop historical cooperation between the two countries in the field of science, education, health, sport and others. The President of the non-state Russian House is Aliou Tounkara.
