Press Statement of Ethiopians and Eritreans in France. Peaceful Rally in Paris on the 4th of December 2021

We, Ethiopians and Eritreans in France together, are expressing our indignation by joining our compatriots in a global #NoMore movement. #NoMore to misguided foreign policies of the United States and European Union member states towards our countries. #NoMore to foreign intervention, in particular to that of the US who is threatening Ethiopia to intervene from American military bases in the Red Sea.

#NoMore supporting a terrorist group such as the TPLF, Tigray People’s Liberation Front, who has been creating chaos in the Horn of Africa for the last decades. Today, this group is being helped by external forces while trying to overthrow the democratically elected government of Ethiopia. #NoMore attempt to internationalize the conflict by launching missiles over Eritrea a sovereign neighbor country -22 missiles- were launched by the TPLF to the capital city Asmara and surroundings.

We wish to draw the attention of the United States, the European Union member states and the Diplomatic community in Paris on the following facts: 1-The ongoing conflict in Ethiopia was ignited by the TPLF when it carried out a murderous surprise attack on the Ethiopian Northern Command. On November 4, 2020, several thousand soldiers were massacred while sleeping inside the permanent military base. This tragic event has put an end to multiple peaceful proposals and dialogue presented for months by the Ethiopian central government and systematically rejected by the TPLF. As part of its constitutional duty, the Ethiopian government launched a law enforcement operation.

2-We, as well as all peace-loving people, are witnessing today warm-heartedness to an armed insurgency group through a one-sided support by the USA, EU and UN to the TPLF. While the same countries and entities are ignoring indisputable facts, to continue condemning and imposing economic sanctions on Ethiopia, on a duly elected government. This stand is contributing to the escalation of the war and has given free hands to the TPLF in its destructive actions leading to more abuses, death, destruction, internal displacement and looting.

3- We are disturbed by the USA’s deliberate and unfounded spread of false information as if fighting was drawing closer to the capital city Addis- Abeba, America is encouraging the international community residing in Ethiopia to leave the country. This is a deliberate attempt to create panic, which can eventually endanger the stability of a sovereign state.

4- We are outraged by the information warfare on Ethiopia and Eritrea engaged by mainstream media. Major news channels such as CNN, BBC, AFP, The Guardian, France24 etc. since they are echoing propagandist messages of the TPLF and its lobbyists, while undermining other voices. Social media platforms, namely Twitter, YouTube and Facebook are now censoring or closing several accounts of reasonable and responsible Ethiopian and Eritrean voices. The “guilt” of these accounts, followed by millions was that they were keen in exposing the TPLF’s crimes in the region. Therefore, we, organizers of the demonstration, Ethiopians, Eritreans and peace-loving people in France:

1. Say #NoMore to those who are supporting the terrorist group TPLF. We urge the USA and EU to turn back from this U.S led destructive foreign policy on Ethiopia and Eritrea. US unilateral sanctions against Eritrea and Ethiopia are a blatant violation of basic principles of international law and violate the basic norms of international relations.
2. Call on the United States, European Union in particular and the international community in general, to end their political campaign and to stop threatening to intervene against the legitimate government of a sovereign country. They must be part of the solution not part of the problem in the Horn of Africa, by stopping their undue pressure on the governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
3. Call on media corporations and their journalists to make sure that their reports on the situation in Ethiopia are balanced, and factual. We also urge social media platforms to show convincing professionalism.
4. Call on all peace-loving citizens in France to support the democratic process in Ethiopia and the rights of its people to elect its leaders. Horn of Africa people have endured conflicts for years. They have the right to secure peaceful and sovereign countries for their citizens!
